― 地球の最果て、南極と北極を旅する魅力 ―

地球で最も過酷な環境とも言われる極地。冬にはマイナス40度を超え、人の定住を許さない世界が広がります。しかし同時に、極地はこの地球で最後まで手つかずの自然が残る貴重な場所でもあります。訪れた人だけが目にすることのできる圧倒的な自然の風景、過酷な環境に適応し力強く生きる野生動物たち──北極のホッキョクグマ、南極の無数のペンギンとの出会いは、唯一無二の感動です。

かつて極地は国家の観測隊や専門家のみが踏み入れる特別な世界でしたが、1950年代には観光としての南極ツアーが始まり、1990年代以降は複数のツアー会社が本格参入しました。近年では船舶技術や安全管理の飛躍的進歩により、昨シーズンには10万人以上の旅行者が南極を訪れています。「街で暮らせる体力レベル」があれば、誰もが“最後の7つ目の大陸”や“地球最北の北極点”を訪れることができる時代です。

本イベントでは、2002年から北極・南極を延べ100回以上訪れている、日本人唯一のエクスペディションリーダーである仏フランスのラグジュアリークルーズ会社PONANT日本支社長、伊知地亮が登壇。極地が次の旅先としていかに魅力的であるか、またその現実的な方法についてお話しします。

An Exclusive Talk by the Head of PONANT Japan on Traveling to Antarctica and the Arctic

The polar regions are often described as the most extreme environments on Earth. In winter, temperatures plunge below –40°C, creating a world where permanent human settlement is impossible. At the same time, these regions remain one of the last great untouched natural frontiers of our planet. Here, visitors are rewarded with overwhelming landscapes found nowhere else on Earth, and with wildlife that has adapted to survive in the harshest conditions. Encounters with polar bears in the Arctic or vast colonies of penguins in the Antarctic offer moments of truly unparalleled wonder.

For many years, the Arctic and Antarctic were accessible only to national research teams and specialists. Antarctic tourism began in the 1950s, and from the 1990s onward, multiple expedition cruise companies entered the field in earnest. In recent years, remarkable advances in shipbuilding, navigation, and safety management have transformed polar travel. Last season alone, more than 100,000 travelers visited Antarctica. Today, anyone with everyday physical fitness can journey to the “seventh continent” or even to the northernmost reaches of the Arctic.

At this special event, Ryo Ijichi Japan President of the French Luxury expedition cruise company PONANT, will take the stage. Since 2002, he has visited the Arctic and Antarctic over 100 times and is the only Japanese expedition leader with such extensive polar experience. Drawing on his firsthand knowledge, he will speak about why the polar regions are an extraordinary choice for your next journey—and how such a journey can be realized in a practical and refined manner.
